Many people have been told at one time or another that the more "stuff" they put on their computer, the slower it will get. This is true most of the time, but the reason it is true is not always what people think.
Computers use memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) to hold active programs on a computer. That is, when you open a program such as a word processor or instant messaging, the computer has to pull that program off the hard drive and store it in memory until the program is closed or until the computer is shut down.
Since there is a limited amount of memory in every computer, there is a portion of the hard drive that is set aside to act as memory. This is sometimes called virtual memory, a swap file, or a paging file. When a computer runs out of physical memory, it is forced to use the hard drive for memory, which is where the sudden, painfully slow speeds come in. Hard drives are meant for storing large amounts of memory for long periods of time, not for fast access like computer memory.
When we add this all up, we could easily have a scenario where someone has installed many programs over time, some of which are automatically opened when the computer starts up. Mixing this with the fact that operating systems like Windows also take up their fair share of memory (sometimes more), the physical memory in a computer can easily be used up before a person has had the chance to do anything.
If this were you and your computer, it would then definitely be part of the reason why your computer runs at the speed it does. Freeing up or adding memory to a computer will have a very noticeable effect, and the best part is that it doesn't cost much.
Memory comes in different sizes (capacity) and speeds. Prices generally start around $50 and go up from there. Unless you already have computer memory running out your ears, upgrading will quite possibly be the most noticeable and least expensive performance upgrade you'll ever perform on your computer!
If this interests you, just call the Tech's at Nomad to get more information. You can speak with one of us personally and we can get you an exact price on what the upgrade will cost. You can either order memory from us and install it yourself, or you can have one of our experienced technicians install it for you.
