DIAL UP PROBLEMS?

How to Set Up Your Computer for Dial Up (click here)

Dial up Internet access is probably the most "fickled" type of access available to Internet users. Of course it's slower than broadband but in some cases more economical. What is sacrificed in speed, for the most part, is made up for by price.

Although the majority of online users today are still using dialup, there are limitations and problems that exist no matter who your ISP may be. Here are a few tips that may help you solve your own problems and speed up your access.

Step 1:

Always check your connection speed to make sure you are accessing the Internet with a speed of at least 53k. Although your modem is 56k it is not likely you will connect at that speed.

You can check your speed by right clicking on the computer icon located at the far bottom right of your screen. After you right click, click one time on "status". An information block will appear and indicate your speed. If it is less than 53k we recommend that you disconnect then connect again.

If you are not connected at a sufficient speed, downloads will be virtually impossible and most websites will be inaccessible. Your sessions will be timed out or you may get "bumped off".

Step 2:

Remember, although you are accessing what is considered a great advancement in technology, you are doing so through traditional telephone land lines. Just because the Internet now exists, telephone companies did not run out and string millions of miles of new telephone lines. We are still using a few strands of copper wire and there are limitations.

Have you ever tried to call someone and the operator comes on and says, "We are experiencing a high volume of calls, please try again later." The same can happen with Dial Up Internet users.

We recommend that you avoid peak Internet access periods. The "rule of thumb"? There isn't one. Simply use commonsense. School age children "gobble up" the internet after school. Adults like to get online just before or just after dinner. Holidays, snow days and those unforeseen days, all contribute to Internet back log.

Just remember, you are just one of millions and millions of users using the Internet and it can be frustrating when everyone wants to us it at the same time.

Step 3:

What kind of browser are you using? Better yet, do you know what browser you are using?

We do not recommend a particular browser, however, make sure it is the most current version. Browsers can play a role in your Internet access. There are compatibility issues that most users may never recognize.

Most browsers have downloading options available on their websites.

Step 4:

Are you overrun with PopUp Ads? Although PopUps will not impact your speed, they will slow your navigation.

We recommend purchasing software that will block most PopUp Ads. There are sites available where you can download trial versions. Research PopUp blockers and see which one will work best for you.

Step 5:

If you are experiencing any consistency (24 to 48 hours) with your Internet access problems, there may be a hardware issue. Modems can malfunction or simply breakdown. Sometimes it can be a nagging problem that just doesn't get better, or the modem will stop working all together.

We recommend that you follow Steps 1-2-3-4 before you decide to buy a new modem.

Before you buy that new modem, or spend $$ on service calls, contact Nomad. We may be able to offer some additional suggestions over the phone. Call us toll free at 800-391-2112 or 989-235-6100 and ask for Lisa.
